Growing up in the majestic mountains of Sindhupalchok, surrounded by the deep green forests and snow-capped peaks of Nepal, I was raised in a world of rich Sherpa traditions. Buddhism was the heartbeat of our family, and from a young age, I was taught to worship the goddesses of our land, performing rituals and offering prayers, hoping they would bring peace and blessings to our lives. I knew the steps, the words, and the prayers well, but something was always missing – a sense of peace that I couldn’t find, no matter how faithfully I prayed.
I often stood before the idols, feeling as if there was a deeper longing in my soul—one that even the most sacred rituals couldn’t satisfy. I began to wonder: Is this all there is? Could there be a greater truth?
A Life Changed at 14: A Path I Never Expected
At the age of 14, my life changed forever. In pursuit of a better future for our family, my mother sent me away to work. Leaving behind my education and the safety of home, I boarded a plane, carrying the weight of responsibility far beyond my years. I had worked in another country before, but when I found myself in yet another foreign land, everything seemed more challenging. Language barriers, long hours, and the deep loneliness of being away from my family made me feel like a stranger in a strange place.
For the first time, I truly felt the weight of isolation. I was a child trying to navigate a world that seemed too big, too overwhelming. The dreams of education seemed to slip further away as the harsh realities of work took over. I often found myself questioning my place in this vast world.
The Unlikely Invitation That Changed Everything
One Sunday morning, as I was going about my routine, I saw a friend preparing to leave. “Where are you going?” I asked. With a gentle smile, she simply replied, “To church.” Something stirred in my heart that I couldn’t explain. It wasn’t just an invitation; it felt like a call – a pull toward something I didn’t fully understand but knew I needed.
Without hesitation, I replied, “I want to come with you.” That simple decision, that single step into the church, would change my life in ways I never imagined.
The Moment of Truth: Discovering a Love That Heals
As I stepped into that church, it was as if the weight of the world had been lifted. The people weren’t just there for a ritual; they were alive with a peace I had never known. Their eyes sparkled with a joy that wasn’t of this world.
As I sat in that congregation, I felt something deep within me stir a longing that had been buried under years of doubt and confusion suddenly awakened. The warmth, the love, and the presence of God enveloped me. It was a feeling of belonging I had never experienced before. I kept returning, week after week, drawn not by obligation but by the overwhelming sense of peace that filled my heart.
Through the stories I heard, the songs I sang, and the people I met, I came to understand something profound: the goddesses I had worshipped were not the source of the peace I had been seeking. They were mere shadows of the true God the God who loved me deeply, who saw my brokenness, and who invited me into a relationship that would change my life forever.
A Call to Serve: From Doubt to Purpose
As my heart transformed, I attended a JNCFM conference where Nepali preachers encouraged me to consider Bible college. At first, I laughed at the idea. How could I, someone who had not completed her education, even think of pursuing theology? The thought seemed impossible. Yet, God’s grace opened doors I could never have imagined. I pursued an M.Div. degree, all the while reclaiming the education I had lost. It felt like a dream I had never dared to dream was becoming a reality.
Today, I serve in the Sherpa Church as a secretary and am honored to be part of translating the New Testament into the Sherpa language. This mission is deeply personal to me because I want my people to hear the Gospel in their own language to understand the love of Christ in a way that touches their hearts, just as it touched mine.
Grateful for the Journey: A New Life in Christ
Along the way, I have encountered many mentors, pastors, leaders, and friends who have supported me, prayed for me, and encouraged me in ways that only God could orchestrate. Their love and prayers have been the foundation of my strength and courage, reminding me always that God’s love never fails.
Perhaps the greatest blessing of all, however, has been the gift of my husband, a man who walks with me in faith, supports me through every challenge, and prays alongside me as we serve God together.
A Message to You: There is Hope
To anyone reading this, whether you are far from home or struggling with questions about your faith, I want to tell you this: Jesus sees you. If you are searching for peace, for a purpose, or for a way out of the darkness, know that He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is calling you, just as He called me, to experience the love and peace that only He can give.
“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
Psalm 40:2
From the cold shadows of doubt and idolatry, I have stepped into the warmth of God’s embrace. My journey is not my own; it is a testimony of the transforming power of Christ. To Him be all the glory for He has made all things new.

Thanks Joanna for your testimony – in coming to Jesus you not only came to the only Light of the world but you also reclaimed the education you thought you had forfeited. In walking with Jesus the only things that we truly lose are the lies and miseries of the enemy and the world. Our main job is to remain on the narrow path of faith in Him which isn’t always easy but surely leads to peace.
