Our Testimony: Healing and Recovery from Cancer

The last time I had written a testimony was back in 2010 when my mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I had written a witness of how Jesus had taken us through that difficult time. Here I am now writing for a second time.

In September 2013, we came to find out that the cancer was back…it was happening all over again. We were devastated once more. Our hearts sank as we realized that we had to start on this journey again. We didn’t know what to do or what was going to happen. It was like stepping into a deep dark tunnel and sinking down into it without knowing its end.

We decided to go abroad for my mother’s treatment. A visitor came to pray for us before we left. He warned us to be prepared to see all the medical ‘facts’ that will be thrown our way – one by one. He said not to be overwhelmed by them, but to remember at all times that Jesus is above these facts because He is the ‘truth’. It was with these few strands of hope, that we left our home. Little did we know at that time, that these very words were going to transform us.

Once the diagnosis started, just as he said, we got the facts – one after another. A pet scan that was done confirmed that the cancer had progressed, not just to the lungs but also to the kidney. She had developed bilateral vocal cord palsy and was breathing through 2mm of airway. The doctors advised, after realizing her age, that it was better to give her a good ‘quality of life’.

We went in search of hope and got none. Not only were we heartbroken but felt so helpless and desperate to make things right again. All we had was the Holy Bible.

In February 2014, suddenly one night, my mother stopped breathing. The airway got blocked. The doctors intubated her. They revived her and an emergency tracheostomy had to be done. With that her voice was gone and her normal eating stopped. She was on nasal tube feeding. She was put in a Critical Care Unit because her condition became worse.

Within a few days she developed multiple viral bacteria in her blood and multiple infections in her lungs, which were already weak. She was on a ventilator and isolated to minimize contamination. She was struggling for weeks. Then one night in March, we lost her for the second time. The infection in her lungs was so bad that she stopped breathing again. Her heart stopped for several long minutes while the CCU teams tried to resuscitate her. Her lungs and heart had collapsed. I remember that night when all this happened. The doctors said that it didn’t look good. They said that they have done their best and to pray to God. We were crushed.

We felt we had reached the end. There was nothing to do except wait in that darkness, feeling helpless, with no consolation. What was remaining was only hope and prayer. We finally let go, to let Jesus do His work. We placed our trust in Him. We remembered Fact vs. Truth. We believed no matter what happens, that it will be good, even though we may not understand it.

While we waited there in that room that night, our church, our friends and so many people prayed for us. We recalled Jesus’ love and His compassion and all the miracles He did when He was alive. He healed all those who came to Him. He healed all who had Faith. He told each of them that it was their faith that made them well. The blind were able to see. The crippled were able to walk again. He not only healed, but He also raised a little girl to life.

He raised Lazarus who was dead for 4 days! So if we go to Him, will He not heal my mother too? He never turned anyone away. He is Life and the giver of Life. Life is His to give and His to take. And as long as our hearts beat, we as His children can go on asking Him. All we could do and did was kneel before Him, clutching the Word of God against our chest and cry out to our Father and plead and pray. We kept saying ‘I do not doubt you Lord’, because that’s what my mother taught us.

So we cast ourselves completely, into His divine care. And then it all started taking a new turn. Jesus was there. He touched my mother and brought her back to life. The doctors were amazed; we saw a miracle unfold; we witnessed my mother coming back to us. It was His mercy on all our tears, all our pleading and all our prayers (not just ours, but of the many people who came together in support and prayer for my mother). We were not alone. We never were even if we may have felt that way.

My mother made it through that night! Praise God for His mercy! And since then, everyday she has been miraculously improving! She is now recovering and rehabilitating slowly.

Everyday has been a miracle – the continued healing, the strength given to my father to take care of her, the hope and the answer to our prayers.

Jesus gave a new life to my mother (and us). It was like a second chance. And He is continuing to heal her and will one day heal her completely. We will go on praying for that.

What I want to say to all who read this – is never ever lose hope even when you think there is none. Don’t ever give up. Place all your hope in Christ, even if doctors tell you that they have done their best; and even if people remind you of what is inevitable, because it is only when men have done their best and there is nothing more left for them to do, can Jesus come to take control.

It is only then can the healing come from Jesus Himself, and it is only then can He do His miracle. We have to make room for Him and make way for Him to come into our lives. And allow Him to do His work in us. We must not be troubled or worried of what He is going to do. Because whatever it is, it will be good. Give all your problems up to Him, trust Him completely and be at peace in that faith.

When you are helpless, God will give you His hand. When you let go, Jesus will resolve things for you. And when you stop, He will start His wonderful and miraculous works.

If you don’t know what to do or where to go, go to our Father in heaven and leave it to Him. He will lead you because He is the way. All we need to do is just follow Him. And if you are feeling hopeless or feel that all is lost, look to Jesus and His suffering, and His strength, and His perseverance. He overcame, so that all of us can also overcome like He did.

Jesus was so badly wounded, but He still carried His cross all the way to Calvary. Every time He fell, He still got up and went on and completed what He had to do. He knew He was going to die but He still continued for our sake, so that today when we suffer unjustly in this world, we will perhaps know how to cope by drawing from His strength. He remained strong and endured everything. He faced death; He died and He finally overcame that too. So don’t be afraid anymore. He has won over it. He arose and is alive. He is right here and He is with you now!

No matter what facts you see or hear, Jesus is the only Truth. He said to ask in His name and you will receive. This is Jesus’s very own words. It is His personal promise to you. So ask Him for His promise and have faith. Believe in these words that He spoke from his own lips. This promise is from the same mouth that created this whole universe. He said heaven and earth will pass but His words will not pass away. So claim this promise and believe in it. Have faith and ask in Jesus’ name.

The children of God who were lost in the desert after they left Egypt, even after God saved them from hundreds of years of slavery and bondage, and even after dividing the mighty sea before their eyes, they were still complaining. They said God had abandoned them. But God will never forsake His own children. You may abandon Him when you are afraid, but He will never abandon you. You may hate Him for the suffering that you are going through, but He will always love you.

Don’t let doubt creep into your mind when everything around you is crumbling and falling. God is good. I believe all things that happen in this life are with His permission. Every single thing is under His control. Even if we suffer innocently and it seems unfair, and even if we or others make wrong decisions, I know in my heart that God loves us, and He will save us.

I admit that I cannot understand some things sometimes. But we are not meant to understand everything because He is God. No matter what we do and how hard we try, we just won’t be able to figure Him out because we are only human. But we have to believe that what we are going through is a small part in a bigger picture that we do not see. It is just like how Jesus suffered innocently because it was the only way to save us.

We simply have to trust Him because He is our Father, Our Creator. So don’t be afraid of anything because we are safe in our Father’s hands. Be at peace when you pray. And be at peace when you have faith in Him. Don’t be afraid of facts anymore because Jesus loves, and Jesus heals.

Turn to the Word of God and you will see it become alive in your lives. In John 14:6 Jesus said,

“I am the way, the truth and the life”.

In our journey these words of God became alive in our lives. We felt Him and experienced Him. He was the way that we followed because we didn’t know what to do and where to go or who would help us. He took us through each day, one at a time.

We submitted everything to Him, and we let Him lead us. He was ahead of us. And every day as we got the facts from the doctors, Jesus our truth was holding us – the truth that healed and overcame these facts. Each day that He gave us was a miracle. It was His Love. Jesus said ‘I am the Life’. He gave my mother her life back! He breathed His life into her and restored her.

Thank you, Lord Jesus. Thank you. Thank you for choosing us among millions to reveal this to us; Thank you for choosing us to touch us with your love; for choosing us and revealing your glory; for choosing us for your miracle. How can we come before you and even utter these words of thanks to you Lord? Because all that happened was because of your mercy and because of your love that we didn’t deserve.

Glory to my Lord, my God, my Father in heaven. I myself, had questioned you and asked you why? But now it makes perfect sense, because your love can only be made perfect in the weakest. It is only when we have reached the depths and darkness of the bottom, could you lift us out of the very deep. I would not have known how much you loved us if we had not been so deep down.

This life is not everything. Being with our Father in heaven is everything. Our comfort is complete only with Him. In Revelation Chapter 21 verse 3 and 4, He promised that in the end, the tabernacle of God will be among men, and He will dwell with us, and we shall be His people, and God himself shall be with us, and be our God. And God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: because the former things have passed away and He has made everything new. And in verse 7 God said

“He that overcometh shall inherit all these things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.”

So don’t be troubled anymore. Don’t cry and don’t give up. You are not alone. Our Lord, our Creator, Our Father who is Love is with you always. So as long as there is life in us, go on asking for what you want from our Lord. And keep on asking and believe in His promises.

I would like to end this testimony with these words from the Bible…Isaiah 53:5,

“He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”

One of those wounds on Jesus’ body was for you…

Thank you everyone.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

Amen.
