Prisoner behind fence thinking

I Picked Up a Bible for the First Time

My name is Jason, and for most of my life I was searching for peace in all the wrong places. I chased drugs, lived dishonestly, hurt people I loved, and lost sight of the man God created me to be. I wasn’t just trapped by addiction; I was trapped inside my own mind.

I spent five years in solitary confinement. Those walls were real, but the greatest prison was the one I had built within myself. I carried guilt, shame, anger, and regret everywhere I went. I thought my life was too broken to ever have a purpose.

Then something changed.

While sitting in a jail cell, I picked up a Bible for the first time. I didn’t read much that day, but I remember the tears. Something in God’s Word reached a place inside me that nothing else ever had. It wasn’t just words on a page; it felt like God was speaking directly to me, reminding me that I wasn’t forgotten.

Recovery became more than just getting sober. It became a new way of living. Every morning I wake up, I hit my knees and thank God for another day. Instead of asking what I can take from the world, I ask how I can give back. Instead of living for myself, I want to live for Christ and for the people who are still struggling.

I still have hard days. Recovery isn’t perfect, and neither am I. But today I have something I never had before: hope. My faith keeps growing, and every step I take reminds me that God can restore what we thought was lost.

I write because I want people to know they are not alone. If you’ve been through addiction, prison, depression, regret, or feel like your life is beyond repair, I want you to know there is another way. God can meet you in your darkest place, just like He met me in mine.

I’m not sharing my story because I have it all figured out. I’m sharing it because someone else may be where I used to be, and if my story helps one person hold on one more day, then every painful chapter has a purpose.

The same God who found me in a jail cell is still changing lives today. If He could transform my life, He can transform yours too.

All glory belongs to God.
