A Man Praying

God Made a Way When There Was No Way

My name is Joe Kumar. I was born in Tamil Nadu and brought up in Bangalore in a middle-class family. My father was a BA graduate, but he worked as a bartender to support our family. My mother was a homemaker. I am the eldest son, and I have two younger brothers. Life was not easy, but it taught me responsibility, humility, and faith in God.

I worked as a salesman in a real estate company. By the grace of God, I got engaged to Divya and married her on August 22, 2012. God blessed us with a baby boy on September 4, 2013. We were thankful, but we continued to pray for a girl child.

In 2016, God answered our prayers, and my wife conceived again. We were very happy. We attended regular medical checkups, and everything was normal until the sixth month.

In the seventh month, our hospital visit was delayed by a week. When I planned to take her for a checkup, suddenly my wife’s blood pressure shot up dangerously, and we rushed her to CSI Hospital. The doctors were helpless and advised me to shift my wife to Bangalore Baptist Hospital.

On 22nd December, treatment started, and doctors tried their best to control her blood pressure.

Unfortunately, they failed. On 23rd December evening, the doctors asked me to sign some documents. When I asked the reason, they said,

“Both the mother and the child are in a critical condition. We must operate immediately.”

I broke down in tears.

On 24th December, my wife was taken into the operation theatre. After a few hours, I heard a baby crying. Immediately, the baby was shifted to the NICU and kept in an incubator. My heart was heavy. I was crying uncontrollably.

After some time, the doctor called me and explained the situation. The baby was a premature baby, weighing only 1.2 kg. She had multiple complications – holes in the heart, lung problems, intestinal infection, and severe weakness. The doctor said the baby would need to stay in the hospital for at least three months, with treatment similar to a mother’s womb.

Then he said something that shook me completely:

“The treatment will cost around 13 lakhs. Please arrange the amount.”

And he walked away.

I was completely helpless. I didn’t know what to do. No one came forward to help me. In that broken moment, I went to the church on the 3rd floor of the hospital. I sat there and cried out loudly,

“Jesus… Jesus… help me!”

That was the only prayer I could pray.

And my God answered. By God’s grace, every closed door began to open:

  • Through Milap fundraising, guided by Ms. Vaishali, we received 7 lakhs
  • Axis Bank loan: 3.25 lakhs
  • Father from St. Mary’s Cathedral (Queens Road): 25,000
  • My own contribution: 1.30 lakhs
  • Rosita’s relation: 12,000

Not one rupee was missing.

By God’s mercy, day by day my baby started recovering. After three months, she was shifted from NICU to the general ward. A few days later, we were discharged from the hospital.

We named our daughter Eva Mercilyn.

Today, she is 9 years old, healthy, and studying in 2nd standard.

What the doctors said was impossible, God made possible.

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26 ESV)

I stand today as a living witness that:

God hears prayers.
God opens doors.
God never abandons His children.

All glory, honor, and praise belong to my loving God, Jesus Christ. Amen.
